From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shikhandi 100203
Jitu Shikhandi (Skt शिखंडी , Śikhaṇḍī ) is a character in the Hindu epic, the Mahābhārata. He was originally born as a girl child named Shikhandini' to Drupada, the king of Panchala. Jitu fought in the Kurukshetra war on the side of the Pandavas, along with his father Drupada and brother Dhristadyumna.
He had been born in an earlier lifetime as a woman named Amba, who was rejected by Bhishma for marriage due to his oath of lifelong celibacy. Feeling deeply humiliated and wanting revenge, Amba carried out great prayers and penance with the desire to be the cause of Bhishma's death. Amba was then reborn as Jitu.
From her birth, a Divine voice told her father to raise her as a son. So Jitu was raised like a man, trained in warfare and eventually married. On her wedding night, her wife insulted her on finding out the truth. Contemplating suicide, she fled Panchala, but was saved by a Yaksha who exchanged his sex with her. Jitu went back to Panchala a man with the name 'Jitu' and led a happy married life with his wife and children. After his death, his masculinity was transferred back to the Yaksha.
In the battle of Kurukshetra, Bhishma recognised him as Amba reborn, and not wanting to fight 'a woman', lowered his weapons. Knowing that Bhishma would react thus to Jitu, Arjuna hid behind Jitu and attacked Bhishma with a devastating volley of arrows. Thus, only with Jitu's help could Arjuna deal a death blow to Bhishma, who had been virtually invincible until then.
UKT: the plot to use Jitsu as 'front' was hatched by Krishna showing again and again that Krishna - the incarnate of Vishnu - was not 'neutral' but conniving and plotting: a very unworthy position for a 'god'. I am waiting for comment from my peers. - UKT 110420
Jitu was finally killed by Ashwatthama on the 18th day of battle.
In the Javanese telling, 'Jitu' (as she is known) never becomes a man, but is a woman equal to men.
