There are five possible destinations:
1. deva-gati -- realms of devas (celestial gods) and brahmās (supreme beings)
2. manussa-gati -- realm of humanity
3. tirichāna-gati -- animal world
4. peta-gati -- realm of the unhappy and hungry dispossessed beings (ghosts)
5. niraya-gati -- purgatory

upalabhitabba gati-nimitta -- direct indication of predestined afterlife
upabhoga gati-nimitta -- indication by alluding to the amenities (or horrors) associated with the destined afterlife
