Identification characters:
A herbaceous climber, tall, branching, glabrous; stems twining, leafy, annual; rootstock of fleshy solid arched V-shaped cylindric tubes, bifurcatedly branched, roots fibrous. Leaves alternate; sessile; laminae lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, the bases cordate, the margins entire, the tips cirrhous, venation parallel, glabrous. Inflorescences solitary cymes, axillary; bracts small, scarious. Flowers large, showy, ebracteolate, the pedicels reflexed at tips, bisexual, actinomorphic, trimerous, hypogynous.Calyx and corolla undifferentiated, perianth petaloid, apophyllous, the segments 6, 2-seriate, linear-lanceolate, the margins crispy, undulate, golden yellow about one third of length from the base, the margins and midrib also, bright red above, persistent. Androecium polyandrous, stamens 6,2-seriate, the filaments stout, filiform, golden yellow, the anthers dithecous, linear, dorsifixed, versatile, dehiscence longitudinal. Pistil 1, ovary 3-carpelled, syncarpous, 3-loculed, the placentation axile, the ovules 2 in each locule, the style filiform, deflexed, the stigma 3-fid, stigmatose within. Fruit a septicidal capsule, linear-oblongoid, coriaceous; seeds subglobose, testa spongy, endospermic.

Flowering period: June - July
Fruiting period: July - September

Distribution: Grows wild throughout the tropics ascending up to 5,000ft.

Parts used and uses: Root -- Anasarca; Oxytocic; Dispels retain placenta; Otitis externa. Leaf -- Jaundice; Ear disease; Infections; Boils, Pustules
