Identification characters:
An evergreen tree; trunks short, erect, head leafy, compact, the younger stems
glabrous, latex milky. Leaves alternate, simple; exstipulate; petiolate; laminae
elliptic, the bases obtuse, the margins entire, obscurely undulate, the tips
shortly acuminate, unicostate, reticulate, glabrous, coriaceous. Inflorescences
in axillary cymes, solitary or the cymes 3-to 5-flowered. Flowers ebracteate,
ebracteolate, the pedicels often deflexed, ferruginous tomentose, bisexual,
actionmorphic, tetramerous, hypogynous. Calyx synsepalous, 8-lobed, 2-seriate,
the outer 4 valvate in bud, ovate-lanceolate, ferruginous tomentose, the inner 4
imbricate, narrower, the tubes short. Corolla synpetalous, the lobes 24, the
outer 16,2-seriate, the inner 8, 1-seriate, lanceolate, the upper parts
brownish, the lower white, the tubes short, fragrant. Androecium polyandrous,
stamens 8, 2-seriate, epipetalous, the filaments short, dilated at the bases,
the anthers dithecous, lanceolate, about half its length longer than the
filament, basifixed, dehiscence longitudinal, the staminodes 8, alternate with
the stamens, subpetaloid, pilose. Pistil 1, ovary ovoid, sericeous, 4-carpelled,
syncarpous, 8-loculed, the ovule solitary in each locule, the placentation axile,
the style grooved, the stigma capitate. Fruit a berry, ovoid, 1-seeded, epicarp
crustaceous, yellow; seed ovoid, compressed, brown, endosperm fleshy.
Flowering period: April - May
Fruiting period: June - September
Distribution: Grows wild and common in plains. Also cultivated
